Since 1985, America has celebrated July as the nation’s official Park and Recreation month. The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has chosen “Celebrate, Advocate, Recreate!” as this year’s theme. In honor of the month, Governor Mark Parkinson has joined with the Kansas Recreation and Park Association (KRPA) in declaring July as Park and Recreation Month for the state of Kansas.
Blue Valley Recreation will celebrate by asking patrons to share their favorite photo on Facebook. Other events planned include special pricing for Saturday Open Gyms and Sunday Open Swims as well as a customer appreciation day.
“It’s great when something good for you is also fun,” said Steve Baysinger, Blue Valley Recreation Executive Director. “Research proves recreation attracts business, enhances real estate values, reduces environmental stress, helps alleviate deviant behavior, facilitates healthy lifestyles and provides a positive economic impact to the community.”
Playing in parks and playgrounds also helps children build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints, improve self-esteem, and avoid at-risk behavior such as drug use and gang involvement.
“Parks and recreation are critically important to the economic and environmental well-being of communities, and the physical and mental health of individuals,” said Barbara Tulipane, NRPA CEO. “It’s the time to show all of America, citizens and public decision makers alike, of the extremely exciting and important role that parks and recreation play for communities.”
“Blue Valley Rec continues to form valuable partnerships with area businesses and organizations,” commented Baysinger. “It is very gratifying to combine resources in order to reach common goals.”
The National Recreation and Park Association is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing park, recreation, and conservation efforts that enhance quality of life for all people. Through its network of roughly 21,000 recreation and park professionals and citizens, NRPA encourages the promotion of healthy lifestyles, recreation initiatives, and conservation of natural and cultural resources.
