Blue Valley Recreation News

Mon, Aug 16, 2010 - [Sports]

With the 2010-11 youth basketball season just around the corner, Blue Valley Recreation surveyed parents from the 2009-10 season and found that 85% of the parents were satisfied with the manner in which the league is meeting their child's needs. The survey results help staff and the Basketball Advisory Council improve the program and continue to meet the needs of the service area.

The voluntary survey, conducted in May, was sent to all parents with kids enrolled in youth basketball. Parents were asked 13 questions ranging from practice times to quality of officiating.

The goal of the survey is to provide honest feedback in regards to all aspects of the program. Along with the questions, parents were asked to provide suggestions for improvements they would like made.

Steve Herrig, Recreation Complex manager, oversees the sports leagues and knows the value of such results.

“The survey results help us form a plan to address any low areas,” said Herrig. “The goal is to offer the best league around and these results show our league is very good, but there is always room for improvement.”

One area of focus for Blue Valley Rec is always officiating. Although the survey indicated that nearly 75% felt the officiating was good to excellent, Herrig and his staff are committed to providing the highest quality of officials every season.

“No official will get every call correct, but the comments provided help our staff develop a better training program,” commented Herrig. “We always want to provide the best officiating possible.”

To meet this goal, Blue Valley Rec has two staff members dedicated to hiring, training, assigning and evaluating officials. The comments on the survey help shape the upcoming training regiment. Classroom time is combined with on-court training to ensure officials know positioning, court management and mechanics. Veterans and rookies alike are assigned three or four practice games prior to the start the season.

Another area getting attention is skill camps. Despite the league offering a postseason tournament for grades 4-7, the survey indicated parents wanted more advanced camps and specialized skill training sessions. The past year, an elite camp with former KU star Danny Manning was offered and staff is working with area experts to provide coaches with additional resources and participants with optional skills camps.

Notable survey results:
95% of parents feel the customer service they received was good to excellent
86% of parents feel the price of the league is reasonable to very reasonable
74% of parents feel the officiating at their child’s games was good to excellent
69% of parents would like to see more advanced/specialized camps and skills-related programs
“Having Fun” topped the list of reasons for participation in youth sports.
Preparation for higher competition was the lowest.

Currently, Blue Valley Rec offers leagues for girls and boys in grades 1 through 7. Participants must reside in or attend a school within the Blue Valley School District boundaries. Click here to learn more about the leagues.
