Dad and volunteer coach Nat Milgram, a third-year coach for his daughter's youth softball team, shares his thoughts on a recent youth sports coaching seminar he attended.

Successful coaching practices were discussed at the National Youth Sports Coaches Association's Coaching Academy Nov. 15, in Orlando. The NYSCS certifies head coaches in Blue Valley Recreation's Youth Sports Program.

Dr. Rick Albrecht, Coordinator for the Sport Leadership Program at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI, spoke at the seminar. Albrecht presented From Good to Better to Best: Taking Our Coaching and Our Athletes' Experiences to the Next Level.

Albrecht defines a "coach" as someone who leads others (kids) and does not merely coach a specific sport. He said the goal of a coach should be to "help kids get from where they are to where they want to go."
Albrecht advocates for coaches to motivate themselves first, before attempting to motivate others. He places more emphasis on improving individual performance, and less emphasis on winning.

Whenever possible, Albrecht believes coaches should involve kids in decision-making such as setting individual goals for higher performance and involving kids in which order to do drills in practice.

"When they have a say in determining the decisions, they will work harder,"Albrecht said.

As a result of attending the seminar, Milgram plans to work with the players on setting and achieving individual goals. He serves as a volunteer coach to help young athletes develop softball skills, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
