Middle school students at Oxford Middle School received special instruction in the art of dance from Blue Valley Recreation instructors this week during Physical Education classes. Kids learned the benefits of dance through instruction and discussion.
As part of Fitness Week, OMS (12550 Switzer) introduced an activity that did not require athletic skills. Dance provides a great opportunity for exercise and social interaction. Dance instructors visited PE classes on Monday and Wednesday, bringing hip music and a vibrant attitude.
Students seemed to enjoy the change of pace. "I really like it," said eighth-grader Elle McAlister. "It was very fun and different."
Basic steps that are often used in many dances were taught in a systematic progression. Students learned the beat of each step before moving to the next skill. After practicing all moves together, music was introduced.
Blue Valley Rec has teamed up with The Refuge Youth Center to offer classes in the hottest dances these days. Age-appropriate instruction is offered for East Coast Swing, Cha Cha, Rumba and Tango. National Champion Oscar Hampton headlines the instructors and has performed in many national venues and competitins. Mario Orelus has been dancing for 11 years and is also a DJ at various metro events.
