Blue Valley Recreation News

Wed, Apr 7, 2010 - [Gymnastics]

Blue Valley Recreation is known for its gymnastics program. From classes, to open gym time, to long time coordinator Keno Rodriguez and instructor/coach Eric Smith, the Blue Valley Rec program has a strong reputation. To further prove the point, four gymnasts from its boy’s team will compete in the Regional Junior Olympic Championships in New Orleans April 9-11. The Region III meet, held on the campus of Tulane University, includes participants from Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.

Mitch McCroskey, Ryan Jones, Payton Hansen and Brandon Hulla will travel to The Big Easy to compete in six events – floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar. Jones, Hansen and Hulla qualified by scoring a minimum all-around score of 75 points in Level 6 and McCroskey qualified with an all-around score of 54 in Level 9.

McCroskey competed last year and placed 14th in Level 7 for ages 12-13. Peter Bentele also performed in the same division and placed 18th.

The Championships are the culmination of the season for Level 6, 7 and 8 athletes and serves as the qualifying meet for the Junior Olympic Nationals for Levels 9 and 10. The competition determines Regional Champions and helps select Region III development teams as well as regional teams for Nationals.

In addition to the four competitors representing Blue Valley Rec, Smith will serve as a judge for the meet’s pommel horse event. Smith, who also judges college meets in Nebraska and Iowa, was recently selected to judge at the national meet in May.
