The program from Blue Valley Rec was awarded the Midwest Regional Council Arts & Humanities honor from the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA). Camp Center Stage was sighted for its innovative and effective method of including youths in performing arts.

 
Blue Valley Rec’s Camp Center Stage has been an integral part of the community for two decades. Nearly 350 students and 50 staff participate each summer in this six-week program in June and July. Camp levels include Pre-Junior, ages 3 ½ -5 years of age; Junior Camp, grades K-2; Intermediate Camp, grades 3-5; and Senior Camp, grades 6-9.

   

Since the inception of CCS, its growing popularity prompted schools throughout the Blue Valley community to add musical theater programs to after-school curriculums in order to meet the interest of these performance minded youth.

   

In addition to providing life-changing youth theater, CCS stresses the importance of creating character and characters. Preparing for show productions satisfies the characters aspect and a benevolent giving program addresses the character side. Each year, campers raise money for charity or particular cause. During the last 12 years, campers and their families have helped more than 30 local organizations and causes to the tune of $127,000.

   

“Camp Center Stage is one of Blue Valley Rec’s signature programs and serves as a model for numerous parks and recreation agencies,” said Steve Baysinger, Executive Director for Blue Valley Rec.

   

The award for the program comes as the camp prepares to celebrate its 20th Anniversary of life-changing youth theater. Registration continues through the end of May and campers begin rehearsals in early June.
 

Headquartered in Ashburn, VA, NRPA works closely with local, state, and national recreation and park agencies, citizen groups, and corporations to carry out its objectives. Priorities include advocating favorable legislation and public policy; increasing public awareness of the importance of parks and recreation; providing continuing education, professional certification and university accreditation; and conducting research and technical assistance.
