Lightning Guidelines

Lightning Guidelines for Recreation Complex

Blue Valley Recreation contracts with Weather OR Not, the premier 24-hour source for up-to-date and detailed weather information and forecasts for our specific area.

We are also in constant contact with ESID, a service of the Blue Valley School District’s system, used for all interscholastic athletics, that provides weather forecasts and also detects lightning strikes of up to 10 miles from any of its detectors (the NE location is Prairie Star MS, the NW location is Harmony MS and the south location is Stilwell Elementary).

When do we stop play?
• Any ESID page for lightning within 10 miles will stop play immediately.
• If there is no page from ESID but there is visual lightning in the distance the on call staff member will contact “Weather OR Not” in an attempt to determine how close the lightning is to our complex. If lightning is determined by staff to be close to the complex play will be stopped even though a page has not been received.

When will play be restarted?
• Play will be restarted once a “No lightning for 15 minutes” page has been received from ESID for all zones.
** Any time a coach wants to pull his/her team from the field or a parent his/her child from the field, due to inclement weather, we will not prevent them from doing so and there will be no action taken against that coach or parent.
