Blue Valley Recreation Commission dance instructor Marilynn Luttrell and marketing supervisor Dawn Harmon recently earned accolades from the Kansas Recreation and Park Association (KRPA). The Association presented Luttrell with the Distinguished Service Award for her contribution to Blue Valley Rec’s dance program and honored Harmon as the Distinguished New Professional for her accomplishments in leading the Commission’s marketing last week at its annual conference.

Halloween is just around the corner and often conjures up images of vampires, bats and other spooky creatures. Now here’s a scary fact: vampire energy represents 5 – 10% of your monthly energy bill.

Vampire energy is the electricity that silently gets sucked away by electronic devices that remain on, even when you think they are turned "off." Culprits include cell phone battery chargers, laptops, TVs, DVD players, computers, printers, video games and power tool chargers to name a few. Also, any device that has a lighted time display (coffee pot, microwave, etc.) is also considered a vampire! A good way to find them is to turn off all your lights at night and walk around your home to find all the glowing buttons or screens.

This wasted energy, represents a relatively small but growing percentage of an individual home’s electricity use. Taken across all U.S. households, it adds up to an estimated 65 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. This extra electricity costs consumers more than $5.8 billion annually and sends more than 87 billion pounds of heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
