Johnson earned KRPA’s Distinguished Commissioner Award at the annual Conference and Trade Show Jan. 28 in Hutchinson, Kan.
Awarded to an appointed commission member, the Distinguished Commissioner Award honors volunteer policy makers for distinguished service within the recreation and park movement at a local, state and or national level.
“Bob has been a major contributor to parks and recreation on so many levels,” explained Steve Baysinger, executive director of the Blue Valley Recreation Commission. “On the local level he has provided outstanding service as a Commissioner leading a very ambitious capital improvements plan and setting future direction with completion of the Commission’s first strategic plan.
Johnson started his association with Blue Valley Recreation as a volunteer coach. He quickly understood the impact recreation in enriching lives and strengthening a spirit of community and was called upon to serve on advisory committees dedicated to continuous improvement of recreation experiences. The Blue Valley School Board recognized Johnson’s productiveness and commitment to the community and appointed him to a leadership role as a commissioner with Blue Valley Recreation.
His dedication to recreation compelled Johnson to serve at the state level on KRPA’s Board of Directors. Johnson assumed new responsibilities in 2006 as a Citizen Representative with the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) Board of Trustees. In 2008,
Johnson was named to the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees. He is the only Kansas member and one of 12 national members.
Baysinger noted that Johnson has played a strong and critical role as a citizen board member the Kansas and National Recreation and Park Associations. “Citizen Board members are instrumental in state and national lobbying efforts in parks and recreation for advocacy and appropriations,” stated Baysinger. “With all the time and energy Bob has devoted to our profession he has certainly earned the recognition.”
Blue Valley Recreation and the community benefit from volunteers such as Johnson – those who dedicate time and passion for a positive impact on the community. Through his focused energy, Johnson has made a difference in his community and at Blue Valley Recreation. Johnson will be honored on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at the Blue Valley Recreation Commissioners meeting. A reception and a brief ceremony will commence at 6:30 p.m. at the activity center on 151st Street and will also honor the Armistead family, who were chosen as KRPA’s Distinguished Volunteers.
