The History of Blue Valley Rec

Ever heard anyone call us Miller’s Woods?

Have you ever wondered about the history of Blue Valley Rec—or why some still call our Sports Complex “Miller’s Woods”? It all began in 1986 when a group of concerned citizens petitioned to address the lack of recreational opportunities in the area. In response, the Blue Valley Recreation Commission (BVRC) formed in August 1986 under the authority of the Blue Valley School District. From the start, we’ve focused on serving our patrons through community-driven programming.

Blue Valley Rec purchased Miller’s Woods and took over operations of the Blue Valley Junior Athletics Association’s baseball and softball program. From there, we steadily expanded our programs into the wide variety of offerings you see today.

We operate under Kansas Statutes Annotated 12-1922 through 12-1935 and follow the guidance of a seven-member policy-making board appointed by the Blue Valley School District Board of Education. Our strong partnership with the school district allows us to use its facilities for a range of activities, including youth basketball, dance recitals, and special population programs.
