At Blue Valley Rec, we have 4 competitive gymnastics teams: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. These teams compete in the local KC League Xcel Program. Bronze is our youngest and least advanced team, and Platinum is our oldest and most advanced team.
Athletes on the team commit to 1 full year (June through May), and they practice twice a week on average. Team members are invited into the program through our referral process. If you or your child is interested in a competitive team, the best place to start is one of our recreation classes!
For more information about competitive gymnastics in Overland Park, you can contact our competitive team coordinator at (913) 685-6029.
Blue Valley Recreation and its partners reserve the right to use all photographs and video of participants for promotional purposes, including print, digital, advertisements, and social media promotions. This includes drone footage.
For the first 15 minutes of class, children will be led by one instructor through a warm-up. For our preschool classes, this consists of a small activity and about 5 minutes of sitting down stretching. For our levels/tumbling classes (ages 6 and up), the warm-up starts with 5 minutes of aerobic activity and 10 minutes of sitting down stretches. After getting warmed up, we split into our classes and start on the first event (bars, beam, floor, or vault.) Each class will make it through two events. For the last five minutes of class, our preschool program plays a game and our older kid’s condition.
We kindly ask that all parents, guardians, and siblings stay in our lobby area during class time. We have two large windows that look into our gym for you to watch your child’s class take place. If your child is feeling uncomfortable about joining their class, we of course encourage parents aid with the hopes that in a couple weeks’ time, your child comes in by themselves.
We encourage your child to wear something they feel comfortable enough in to run around, flip, go up-side down, etc. This could be a leotard or athletic clothing (preferably nothing too baggy or overbearing). We also encourage your child’s hair to be pulled out of their face if it is below their shoulders.
Your child does not need to bring anything specific for class. Water bottles are highly encouraged. Most kids set them inside the gym doors for when we break for water. We also have a water fountain in the lobby they can use.
Do you have a passion for helping kids build confidence and develop a sense of belonging? We’re always on the lookout for energetic, positive, and patient gymnastics coaches.
