Blue Valley Recreation Commission (BVRC) fitness coordinator Tonya Williams was recently honored as the Kansas Recreation and Park Association’s Distinguished New Professional. Williams has been with Blue Valley Rec since April 2018.

Williams elevated the fitness component of the Recreation Center @ Hilltop membership through her ability to combine trending workouts with member feedback. She continually seeks out partnerships with choreographed fitness companies to structure a fitness catalog that often reaches the maximum space available.

“Tonya responds to the task of the growing fitness program with enthusiasm and determination,” commented Jason Goin, Facility Supervisor. “Her vision not only applies to current trends, but also positions Blue Valley Rec for future growth. She is a huge reason for the success of our fitness program.”

Described as an innovator, Williams found the silver lining during the COVID-19 pandemic and spearheaded the challenge of offering virtual fitness classes through live streams and an online fitness library. Her efforts paved the way for more than 60 fitness classes live streamed each week in addition to the 75 in-person classes offered. The fitness library also continues to grow each month.

“It is an honor to be nominated and selected as the KRPA Distinguished New Professional,” reflected Williams. “I am ecstatic to have the opportunity to impact so many lives while working with an amazing team and I can’t wait to grow the program even more.”
