Sports are more than just sports

More Than a Medal, More Than a Game

February 22, 2026

US men's hockey team celebrates on the ice.

We’ve said it countless times, and we believe it more with every season that comes and goes. Sports are more than just sports.

They’re lessons. They’re relationships. They’re moments that shape who we become long after the final buzzer sounds.

That belief came into sharp focus during the Olympic journey of the United States men’s hockey team.

Winning gold was the goal. It always is at that level. But what made this run unforgettable wasn’t just the medal, it was what the team carried with them to get there.

Before every game, a jersey hung in the locker room.

It belonged to Johnny Gaudreau, a player many believed would be on the Olympic roster. A face of American hockey known not just for his talent, but for the joy and love he brought to the game.

On the evening of August 29, 2024, Johnny and his younger brother Matthew were struck and killed by a drunk driver while cycling in Oldmans Township, New Jersey.

From that point on, this team wasn’t just playing for a podium finish. They were playing for something deeper.

That jersey became a reminder that sports are more than just sports. It reminded the players that the game connects people. That it carries memories. That it has the power to unite us in moments of both celebration and grief.

Every shift was played with intention. Every game carried weight. Not because of pressure, but because of purpose.

And then came the celebration.

After the final horn sounded and gold was secured at the Olympic Games, the team didn’t just celebrate a gold medal. They honored a life. Gaudreau’s jersey was brought onto the ice, followed by his two young children, who joined the team to celebrate the moment their father had helped inspire.

That image mattered more than any highlight.

Because that’s the version of sports we need young athletes to see.

In youth sports, the focus isn’t on scores, standings, and championships. Those things have a place, but they’re not the point. Sports are more than just sports when they teach kids how to show up for others, how to carry teammates through hard moments, and how to lead with heart instead of ego.

Youth sports are where children learn what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves. They learn empathy in the locker room. Resilience after a tough loss. Joy in shared success. They learn that winning feels best when it’s rooted in respect and connection.

The gold medal will always be remembered.

But what this team showed by honoring Johnny Gaudreau every game, by bringing his children onto the ice, by choosing meaning over moment will last longer.

Because when kids and parents understand that sports are more than just sports, they don’t just become better athletes.

They become better teammates. Better leaders. Better people.

And that’s the real win.
