Big Changes Happening at the Activity Center

The Blue Valley Rec Activity Center (AC) is about to get even better! Thanks to updates in our strategic plan, we’re investing in major capital improvements that will expand opportunities, improve safety, and make the facility more accessible for everyone.

Expanding Dance Studio Space

Our dance programs have continued to grow, and with that comes the need for more room. The Activity Center renovation will include a larger dance studio area, giving dancers of all ages extra space to move, practice, and perform. Parents and participants can look forward to a brighter, more open environment designed for creativity and movement.

Adding More Classrooms

Education and enrichment are core to what we do. The project will add new classrooms to better accommodate art, STEM, and recreational programs. With more flexible spaces, families will see expanded offerings and improved scheduling options.

Finishing Out the Second Floor

The second floor of the Activity Center will soon cover the entire building footprint. This expansion means more usable space for programs, meetings, and community events. It also allows us to better serve growing demand while planning for future needs.

Safety First: Roof Repairs, Tornado Shelter, and Drop-off Lane

Keeping our community safe is always a top priority. As part of the improvements, crews will repair the roof and add a tornado shelter. The shelter provides peace of mind during Kansas storm season, ensuring participants and staff have a secure place to go if severe weather strikes. The roof above the gymnastics center will be fully repaired to protect one of our most popular programs and the entryway and drop-off lane is getting a redesign for better traffic flow and safety.

Accessibility Matters: Installing an Elevator

To make the Activity Center welcoming to all, the project includes a new elevator. This upgrade ensures the entire building is fully accessible, giving every visitor equal access to programs and events.

Why These Improvements Now?

These upgrades are not random, rather they were identified as high priorities in the Commission’s most recent strategic plan update. By aligning with long-term goals, the project strengthens our ability to enrich lives and build community well into the future.

What It Means for You

Construction may cause temporary inconveniences, but the end result will be worth the wait. Families can expect:

  • More programs thanks to additional classrooms and studio space
  • Improved accessibility through the new elevator and finished second floor
  • Safer facilities with a tornado shelter and roof repairs
  • Better long-term planning aligned with our strategic vision
