Blue Valley Rec’s Suits & Sneakers Weekend brought the nationwide Coaches vs. Cancer initiative to the local youth sports community in January 2024. Led by recreation assistant Katie Wieberg, this event encouraged volunteer basketball coaches to wear suits and sneakers during games to honor loved ones affected by cancer and raise awareness for the ongoing fight against the disease. Coaches held signs reading “I suit up for…” with heartfelt tributes to friends and family members reminding players, parents, and spectators that sports go beyond wins and losses.
The event saw participation from over 35 coaches creating a meaningful connection between recreation sports and a greater cause. Social media lit up with photos and stories amplifying the impact. One team’s participation honored a player’s father who recently passed away, showing how this program brought the community together in support and reflection.
