Former Blue Valley Recreation Commission volunteer commissioner Cindy McAlister received the Kansas Recreation and Park Association’s Distinguished Commissioner Award. McAlister served on the board from 2010-2018 and was the Commission chair 2015-17.
A model of enthusiastic leadership, McAlister has been one of the most active policy makers, embracing the chance to volunteer at community events and work with the special populations participants.
“While serving as a Commissioner, Cindy was action-oriented while being a thoughtful listener and a consensus-building team player,” commented Blue Valley Recreation Executive Director Steve Baysinger. “She brought a contagious enthusiasm to her interactions with commissioners, volunteers, staff and stakeholders.”
A strong advocate of the role of parks and recreation in enriching lives, McAlister took advantage of opportunities at special events and political interactions to share the successes of Blue Valley Rec. She communicated plans with community stakeholders to forge partnerships and developed meaningful relationships throughout the area.
As chairperson, McAlister spearheaded the action plan to finance and build the commission’s largest capital project in the Recreation Center at Hilltop. The 120,000-square feet facility opened in January of 2017, setting the stage for enriched fitness and recreation programming.
“Accomplishments during Cindy’s terms with Blue Valley Rec will positively impact generations to come,” added Baysinger.
