Served as interim director for the last few months

DeWald named Executive Director

October 26, 2021

Commission Chair Lynn Spraetz announced Shane DeWald as the new executive director for Blue Valley Recreation Commission. DeWald has been serving as interim director since the retirement of Steve Baysinger in September.

DeWald was brought on staff in 2018 as the recreation manager for Blue Valley Rec after 11 years at Belton Parks and Recreation in Missouri, the last two as director. At Belton, DeWald implemented budgetary controls that increased revenue while overseeing 260 acres of park property including a wellness center, two aquatic facilities, and three athletic complexes.

In just under four years with Blue Valley Rec, DeWald has streamlined operations at the Sports Complex and the Rec Center. His leadership helped those two facilities continue to thrive despite the unprecedented challenges of COVID as he strengthened existing partnerships and built valuable relationships that benefitted the Blue Valley community.

“Shane impressed the hiring committee with his leadership and vision,” noted Lynn Spraetz, Commission Chair. “His ability to develop relationships within the community aligns perfectly with Blue Valley Rec’s purpose.”

DeWald majored in sports/recreation management at Fort Hays State University (Kan.) and received his master’s from Wichita State in sports administration. His career in the field started as a program coordinator with Liberty Parks and Recreation. Throughout his career, DeWald knew where he wanted his path to travel.

“Being the executive director at Blue Valley Recreation is a dream come true,” reflected DeWald. “Blue Valley Rec is known for quality programs, and I am excited about the relationship we have with the community.”
